THE LOGGIA, RUINS & GARDENS

The Italianate Loggia is licensed for weddings and civil ceremonies, with roses climbing over its gothic stone arches and the romantic house ruins behind it. Beyond the ceremony setting, the Wall Garden, formal rose garden, fountains, avenues and views across the Sussex Weald give us far more variety than we could ever need.

The trick is not to turn that choice into a tour. We pick a tiny number of locations that suit the light and your timings, make something beautiful, and bring you straight back to your guests.

A CEREMONY WITH REAL PRESENCE

There is something very special about hearing vows, music and laughter carry through the open Loggia. The ceremony still feels intimate even when more guests are seated on the lawn, because everyone faces the same architectural focal point.

Sophie Sherriff and her team run Nymans weddings with a clear, well-practised rhythm. That structure is helpful: we agree the essential photographs and the order in advance, so you can relax into the ceremony rather than manage it.

TIMING GROUP PHOTOGRAPHS WELL

Nymans often gives couples a lovely drinks moment immediately after the ceremony, with formal groups photographed a little later. That works beautifully when it is the plan. If your priority is to photograph everyone while they are still gathered at the Loggia, say so early and agree it with the team — one of my couples did exactly that, and the whole group was finished quickly because nobody had drifted away.

The main guest facilities are away from the Loggia rather than immediately beside it, so people naturally begin moving once the ceremony ends. A short, pre-agreed list is the difference between calm group photographs and trying to find someone who has disappeared for five minutes.

DRINKS, THE SUNK GARDEN & CHILDREN AS GUESTS

The Sunk Garden and connected lawns keep the celebration feeling together while still giving guests room to move. It is particularly lovely when children are part of the day: they have space and visual interest around them, while the adults can keep chatting, drinking and enjoying the setting.

This is exactly where documentary photographs come alive — rainbow fans, champagne, embraces, people crossing paths and the spontaneous moments no one could have scheduled.

RAIN, UMBRELLAS & LOVING THE DAY YOU GET

Nymans is an outdoor-led wedding setting, so I would plan emotionally as well as practically for the weather. If rain is forecast, a set of elegant hired umbrellas is a brilliant investment — then we go for it. The weather is not an interruption to your wedding story; it is part of the day you actually had.

Ask Sophie about the current wet-weather plan for the Loggia and lawns. If you would genuinely love a separate fair-weather couple session later, I am always happy to discuss it, but my first instinct is to photograph the rain with all the joy and atmosphere it brings.

FAST, BEAUTIFUL COUPLE PORTRAITS

Nymans has hundreds of possible backdrops, but you do not need hundreds of portraits. Ten focused minutes among the ruins and gardens can be plenty. We use the nearest beautiful light, keep you moving and talking, and avoid turning the wedding into a long photoshoot.

That is especially important here because the setting itself already does so much of the visual work: tree-lined paths, dark stone, vibrant planting and little glimpses through archways.

A FOUR-HOUR NYMANS WEDDING

My four-hour collection works beautifully for a Nymans wedding. It can cover arrivals, the ceremony, congratulations, essential groups, quick couple portraits and the beginning of food or drinks before you continue elsewhere. It gives you a complete story without paying for hours you do not need.

Because I live less than 25 minutes away, the venue is wonderfully local for me. That makes planning straightforward and keeps a shorter celebration feeling generous rather than rushed.

PHOTO + FILM WITH THE DYNAMIC DUO

This wedding was photographed and filmed. I work alongside my husband Mike and we are an absolute dynamic duo: experienced enough to anticipate what is happening, organised enough to help everything run smoothly and efficiently, and still completely committed to bringing the joy, laughter and fun.

Because photography and film are working as one team, you do not spend your day repeating moments for two separate suppliers. Everything feels lighter on the day and beautifully complete afterwards.

RECEPTION & ONWARD PLANS

The National Trust currently lists the Riding House Tea-room as a reception option. A short Nymans ceremony also works brilliantly before travelling to a hotel, spa, country pub or another relaxed reception nearby — build the day that suits you rather than stretching it for tradition’s sake.

Nymans is close to Handcross and the A23, which makes onward travel, taxis and supplier access straightforward. If lots of guests are moving together, a wedding bus would be a joyful and practical way to take everyone on to the reception. Mid Sussex Catering are also excellent here; I have eaten some genuinely memorable food from their team.
