A beautiful November wedding at Cowdray House
There’s something incredibly special about Cowdray House in November. The light is soft, the grounds have turned and, once the candles are lit, the whole house feels warm and cosy. This day had all of that — and so much feeling.
The setting
Why Cowdray House works so well for autumn and winter weddings
Set within the Cowdray Estate near Midhurst, Cowdray House is grand, but it never feels stuffy. It has so much character, and in the colder months the fireplaces, paintings and warm-toned rooms really come into their own.
And that matters in November. You’re not relying on blazing sunshine or spending the whole day outside. There are beautiful pockets of window light all through the house, as well as plenty of space for everyone to settle in and enjoy themselves.
If you’re thinking about a winter wedding, I’d say embrace it. The candlelight, darker evenings and rich seasonal flowers all add to the atmosphere. It feels cosy, stylish and completely different from a summer wedding — in the best way.

All the little autumn details
Botanica created the most beautiful seasonal flowers in rust, cream, soft pink and deep green. They felt completely at home in the house and brought so much colour to the day.
The morning
A calm morning inside Cowdray House
The morning felt lovely and unhurried. Hair and make-up, the last little jobs, people popping in and out of the room — all those quiet bits before the day properly begins.
I never want this part of the day to feel like a photoshoot. I’ll gently guide you if you need me, but mostly I’m watching for the small things: a hand squeezing yours, a look across the room or the moment everyone suddenly realises it’s time to go. Those are so often the photographs that take you straight back.
The ceremony
A ceremony full of real emotion
One of the biggest worries couples have about an autumn or winter wedding is the weather. I completely get it. But honestly? Soft November light is gorgeous to photograph, and Cowdray House gives us so many lovely indoor options too.
The ceremony was full of feeling — the nerves just before the entrance, a very emotional groom, the ring exchange and that just-married walk back through the house. None of it needed setting up. I could simply let it happen and photograph it as it felt.
Honestly? Autumn and winter weddings might secretly be some of my favourites.
The celebration
Champagne, candlelight and everyone together
By the time everyone sat down for dinner, it was dark outside and the room was glowing with candles. It looked incredible.
This is why I love a winter wedding. Outside might be chilly and grey, but inside it feels even warmer. The speeches had everyone laughing, the champagne was flowing and there was so much happening around the tables. I photographed it all as it unfolded — the big reactions, but also the little moments happening in between.
